I'll be watching the Red Carpet show tonight.
Yes, I know its called The Academy Awards and they hand out Oscar statuettes to the winners, but for me it's all about the Red Carpet. It's a visual thrill to watch the fashion masterpieces and mishaps that traipse down that long, slow entrance to the ceremony.
The interviews are usually beyond asinine boring as they stroll along. It's painfully slow going, but it does allow us to all get an up close and personal look at what they're wearing.
The chatter is usually a lot of sycophantic sucking up and is usually just an opportunity to mention who they're wearing...but then isn't that the whole point? It's what allows them to wear the clothes and jewels as a free walking advertisement.

Remember the days when actresses actually chose their own outfits? Some even designed their own gowns. Not that they'd like to admit it theses days... nor should they have back then.
Remember some of these beauties?

Of course Cher could always be counted on for a stunning outfit, but for some reason they never seemed like mistakes on her. Just costumes. Of course a lot of them were designed by Bob Mackie who was an astounding costume designer.

Gotta love Cher's outfits. She recognized the Oscars for what they were...a show. And what do you wear to perform? A costume!
Time to butter some popcorn and settle in for the show...
Tonight's the big night!
ReplyDeleteWatching the red carpet right now...so many fabulous gowns this year..it is hard to pick a favorite. I have not seen any mistakes yet...like some of the ones pictured here.
ReplyDeleteI still think the worst was Gwyneth.. Even though the swan dress still gets all the attention I still think It fit Bjork and she looked cute. Gwyneth just looked bad head to toe. Have fun.
ReplyDeleteI love it! Thank you for the funny walk down memory lane. That dress that Hilary Swank wore - what in the Barbie/Princess hell?
ReplyDeleteHave a great evening!
Popcorn sounds tasty right now.
So far the fashions are much more beautiful than these examples!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the evening!
You forgot the horrible pajama Barbara Steisand wore when she got the oscar for Funny Girl!
ReplyDeleteOh I love the ugly! They all try so hard to be perfect now! Now we watch their publicists who are in behind. My favourite last night was this woman wearing a shortish grey-green "bag"!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me about some of the most horrific outfits ever to grace a red carpet! Surely one look in a mirror could have prevented some of these horrors! Very entertaining though.
ReplyDeleteI agree that seeing the outfits is one of the highlights of this event. How could we ever forget Cher's 'costumes.' What a great entertaining post!

YOu picked some winners to remind of us the past performances! The SWAN I think was my all time favorite........YUCK!
ReplyDeleteThis year I think for the most part they all did a pretty good job!I am not a fan of strapless however, cause I always seem to see them pulling up!Loved the fall on the steps!thought she did a good job with the recovery! You nailed it with CHER........she always looked stunning no matter what!I dress to preform almost every day too!Not like her but today am headed out the door in a denim kaftan and a fur vest with Uggs! Not my best but somehow will make it through the day!
Ah, life before celebrity stylists. Poor Geena Davis really could have used one.
ReplyDeleteThis post was almost more fun than the "Red Carpet" was! It was fun to see all of those outfits from the past lol! I'd forgotten about some of them, so hilarious! I didn't actually watch the Oscars themselves, just the red carpet and then I DVR'd the Oscars and fast forwarded through all the boring stuff to the songs by Jennifer Hudson, Barbara Streisand and all the good ones and that was good enough for me! Thanks for stopping by, sweets ... and for the lovely compliment ;) xoxo ~S

These photos made me laugh outloud. Hilarious! No matter how much glamour and glitz there is we always remember the worst of the worst. That swan dress?! So funny! : )
